Press Release
Eco-Friendly Disc Option
Screen Print magazine, July 2010
Peter Scicluna believes the EcoDisc will give the industry the opportunity to enhance its green credentials.
The Video Ezy and Trade Guys veteran is Executive Director of the unlisted public
company Ecodisc Ltd, which officially began selling its new environmentally friendly DVD last month.
While Scicluna expects more interest to come initially from the corporate sector and organsiations such as schools and libraries, he does see a place for the disc in the DVD industry.
“The Government has set the agenda to improve Australia’s green credentials
and reduce our carbon footprint.” he told Screen Print. “There are already
companies that want to be seen to be doing things in a more eco-friendly way and
that’s what we can offer.”
The EcoDisc is thinner, lighter and more flexible than normal DVDs, and as such requires 50 percent less energy to manufacture. In addition, it is manufactured with 50 percent less polycarbonate and doesn’t contain the toxic bonders that are common in discs.”
According to Scicluna, EcoDisc’s other advantage is that it is an easy-to-recycle product – unlike the millions of DVDs and CDs that currently make up a proportion of e-waste landfill because there are no viable recycling options.
“Not everyone is going to go green but this EcoDisc does give companies an alternative,” he adds. “The product comes with a carbon calculator and that shows that on a run of 5,000, the EcoDisc saves 340kg of CO2; that’s the equivalent of a car driving 3,800km, so it can make a huge difference.”
At present the disc is available only as DVD5, but the company is already trialling an audio CD version and expects to offer an EcoDisc DVD9 next year. Futher down the track a Blu-ray version is also a possibility.
Although the disc is thinner and lighter, Scicluna says there is no difference in quality or durability.
The company will also offer a disc repair service that will help to prevent products being thrown out prematurely.
