Press Release
‘GREEN’ DISC BIG BUSINESS IN E-WASTE
2nd March 2010
With the majority of companies vying to prove their eco-credentials, green-DVD producers Ecodisc Limited are targeting their product at businesses that use disposable media in their day-to-day operations.
And going green is becoming big business for both the end user and companies involved in supplying greener alternatives for existing products.
The EcoDisc is thinner, lighter and more flexible than normal DVDs, and as such requires 50% less energy to manufacture. It is also manufactured with 50% less polycarbonate and doesn’t contain the toxic bonders that are common in DVD’s today.
Another unique selling point is that EcoDisc is an easy-to-recycle product – unlike the millions and millions of DVDs and CDs that currently make up a good proportion of e-waste landfill. Part of Ecodiscs medium term strategy will be a centralised disc repair service that will help to prevent products from being thrown out prematurely.
Peter Scicluna, Executive Director of Ecodisc Limited, says the company’s products will give businesses opportunities to contribute positively to the environment.
“The Ecodisc product range includes the media itself, obviously, but also includes disc repair and recycle services – we’re providing a complete solution for companies that want to improve their environmental position over the next year to two,” he says.
“Certainly, the EcoDisc will appeal to individual consumers who, when presented with an option to buy an environmentally friendly product, will do so. This is planned to be released early in 2011.
“However, probably our greatest volume of sales will be with media printers and resellers like distributors of movies, music, information and TV shows on DVD and CD.
“We want to push public recognition of the EcoDisc, so companies that use our products will know that their buying public recognises the environmental value of the materials they are using in their own products.”
The repair and recycle services will be offered to DVD retailers and rental businesses, allowing them to then offer the services to their individual customers as an outsourced service.
“The EcoDisc is essentially about changing the habits of a culture that’s based around consumption and disposal because of the lack of any viable alternative,” Mr Scicluna says.
“Our repair service will allow retailers to help customers save movies, games and data that they might have thought to have been lost due to disc damage and become landfill”.
To fund the expansion of the product Ecodisc have signed up with compliance platform, the Australian Small Scale Offerings Board (ASSOB) to raise the necessary capital.
Mr Scicluna says he believes that green initiatives should start at any level, and this is the driving approach behind Ecodisc Limited.
“People may ask why we decided to ‘green’ the DVD when, individually, they might seem fairly insignificant when compared to the environmental problems created by cars or power stations,” he says.
“Collectively, there are billions of DVDs in the world and eventually they will all get thrown out.
“Not only that, but their manufacture creates more waste, both from a carbon and a chemical usage point-of-view.
“If we can improve industries and products, one at a time, with new methods and techniques that are environmentally friendlier, than that is simply a good thing.”
“I think environmental progress is going to come from a combination of individuals and companies who are putting forward initiatives that are embraced by the public that are in harmony with the government environmental strategies.”
At the moment Ecodisc Limited are only producing an environmentally friendly DVD, however, a CD and CD-ROM with similar green credentials should be produced by the end of 2010.
According to Mr Scicluna, the introduction of these products into the market will encourage others to think about other ways to be environmentally friendly.
“Whilst the EcoDisc itself has environmental benefits, the proliferation of this product will serve as a reminder to people about little things in their life that can be done more sustainably,” he says.
“Green thinking perpetuates green actions – and I believe EcoDisc can serve as a catalyst for this.”
